19th Century Oil on Canvas Seascape Painting. Depicting a rocky landscape with ocean view and sail boats in background. Signed lower right "J.B. Sword 81". (James Brade Sword, American, 1839-1915). Born in Philadelphia, he spent some of his childhood in Macao, China. Upon his return to Philadelphia, he was employed as a Civil Engineer on various surveys and earth-moving projects. In 1861 he began his studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He was a popular painter of portraits, landscapes and seascapes. Exhibited in New York and Philadelphia. Image size 15-1/2" x 25", in a gilt molded frame, 22-1/2" x 32-1/2" overall. Condition: Painting is good, craquelar and minor losses, needs a light cleaning, frame shows minor wear.
