Description
Roman, ca. 1st century CE. This is an aesthetically pleasing example of one of the most revolutionary technologies in the ancient world - the amphora. This particular example is from an ancient shipwreck, covered in barnacles and seashells, which give it a really dramatic look! Lacking its cork and pitch stopper, the original contents of this amphora are unknown -- based on the shape, it may have been stewed fruit or salted fish (larger ones were used for wine, and more globular ones for olive oil). Amphorae formed the basis of the Roman economy -- storage vessels for transporting goods throughout the Empire, with examples found from North Africa to Britain. Many of them met the same fate as this one, lost at sea, but to find one intact and raise it is much rarer! Size: 20" L x 9.25" W (50.8 cm x 23.5 cm)
