Description
Rare Rookwood Tiger Eye and Goldstone vase shown in the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle with butterfly decoration done by Albert Valentien in 1899. Pictured are 7 butterflies in flight, beautifully detailed by the artist. Marks include the company logo, which indicates the date, shape number 80 D, the incised initials of the artist, an incised M by Valentien to designate this as a Mahogany vase, the company notation for Standard glaze on Red clay and an esoteric mark that we have never seen before, an oval with cross hatching. Also present is a faded but mostly intact Rookwood paper label from the Paris Expo. Height 9 1/4 inches. Very faint crazing and an unfortunate two inch line at the rim. Few Paris Expo pieces have passed through our hands and they are universally (no pun intended) of the highest quality.
