Description: A four piece lot consisting of three crystal plates and one candy dish. 1. A sand carved 8" plate with leaves and berries. Signed, "Franz Grosz" on front. 2. Two 8.5" crystal plates signed on the back, "Lalique France". One is the St. Sylvestre pattern , the other, sprigs of lily of the valley. Last is a square cut ribbed candy dish signed on the bottom,"Tiffany & Co".
History: Franz Grosz and his company named Groszart. He was an artist who worked in a variety of media, including glass. He did not work for a glass firm, but purchased blanks (glass with no pattern or decoration), which he decorated by a process he called sandcarving. He often sold his glass through a firm, Mary Ryan. In 1951, the firm was in Elmhurst NY and was owned by Joseph F. Grosz and Robert Bodkin, and listed themselves as "decorators of glass for giftware and decorative architectural purposes". Franz Grosz studied at the Art Students League and the National Academy. He had a long and varied career, starting as a WPA artist. He exhibited at the Bodley Gallery in NYC and Galerie Visconti in Paris. His work has been in the Carnegie Institute and he is a known for his art glass.
Lalique is a French glassmaker, founded by renowned glassmaker and jeweller, René Lalique in 1888. Lalique is best known for producing glass art, including perfume bottles, vases, and hood ornaments during the early twentieth century. Following the death of René, Lalique transitioned to producing lead glass (crystal) works during the 1950s while under the direction of René's son, Marc Lalique.
