Description
Pre-Columbian, Mayan, Guatemala, ca. 400 to 800 CE. Finely-crafted stone bark beater made from hard grey stone. Bark beaters were tools used to pound tree bark, to make the bark softer for the processing of barkcloth, which is used for making paper, and clothing. This tool has many different variations that are seen in indigenous cultures worldwide, yet all for a similar purpose. Size: 3-1/2" x 2-7/8" (8.9 x 7.3 cm)
Provenance: Ex-private Olan collection, California, by family descent, acquired 1960 to 1970.
