A steep forest meadow at the Plombergstein is flooded with bright sunlight through the dense fir branches. In the back appears a little hat and the blue sky with some of the mountains of the Salzkammergut. Helmberger was a skilled landscape painter who was fascinated by the wonders of nature. He found his motifs in his immediate surroundings, especially the landscape around his hometown of St. Gilgen at Wolfgangsee. He skillfully captured the varying, seasonal atmospheres of this scenery in numerous paintings. The result was a wonderful oeuvre of similar motifs, which the painter continued to discover anew.



Condition:

The painting is in very good condition. The stretcher measures 71 x 101.5 cm and the dimensions of the frame are 84 x 114.5 cm.



Adolf Helmberger (1885-1967)

Adolf Helmberger was born in Sankt Gilgen in Austria and studied in Salzburg at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. His teachers were Christian Griepenkerl (1839-1912) and Alois Delug (1859-1930). At the onset of the First World War, Helmberger volunteered as a war painter – he was excluded from service as an active soldier due to a hearing loss – and was stationed at the Russian and Italian fronts. Besides his numerous landscape paintings, Helmberger also created several war paintings, which are among the best-known works of his oeuvre. (tm)
