Description
Africa, Nigeria, Bini, ca. early 20th century CE. A beautifully carved Bini mask with stylized facial features, openwork eyes with dramatically overhanging lids, and most impressive long horns - all highlighted with natural pigments of black, blue, and yellow hues. Such long curved horns are regarded as quite a beautiful element of the Bini aesthetic and "azigho" is a special praise name applied to animals that exhibit this trait. This mask is most likely an azigho mask, a type usually used in the Ekpo cult healing rituals. The Ekpo society oversees the welfare of the village and settle disputes. Ekpo members don masks, raffia costumes, and other accouterments to impersonate their ancestors. The Ekpo society also performs rituals for planting, harvesting (in particular the yam harvest), and funerals. A fine Bini mask with stylistic elements that reflect the influence of their better known neighbors, the Yoruba. Size: 4.75" W x 10.75" H (12.1 cm x 27.3 cm)
