IRWIN JIM: (1930-1991) American Astronaut, Lunar Module pilot of the Apollo XV mission. The eighth man to walk on the Moon. A.L.S., Jim Irwin, one page, 4to, Colorado Springs, 24th May 1986, to Sean, on the printed stationery of the High Flight Foundation. Irwin states that he was pleased to have been with his correspondent at Ameripex '86 and thanks him for arranging his participation in the Space Unit programme and commenting 'I am hoping for great results on the Apollo 15 cover auction'. Irwin explains that the proceeds will go towards the missionary projects of the High Flight Foundation and further remarks 'I gave 25 of these covers to the Foundation and the others went to our children. Perhaps you could help us market the other covers? You could be an answer to prayer'. The astronaut also writes 'I spent a lot of time in Bethpage as I learned about the lunar module at Grumman. Your part of the country is very familiar to me'. Irwin concludes by subscribing his letter 'Your grateful friend from the Moon' and also adds the mission name Apollo 15 and a small drawing of the Moon beneath his signature. About EX
