Description
Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire), Azande peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. This is an anthropomorphic, carved wood figure that appears to be made of a piece of driftwood or other kind of "found" piece of wood. The figure is known as a yanda: an abstract human figure reduced to its essentials; most are female, as this one appears to be, representing protective spirits. Yanda figures were carved and then hidden away, to assist members of a secret society when they needed spiritual help. This piece has pierced holes that may have once held rings or beads, which are common decorations for these objects. Size: 2.5" W x 9" H (6.4 cm x 22.9 cm)
