Description
Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zande/Azande people, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden protective figure with brass rings known as a yanda, which were crafted by for use in the Mani secret society. The abstract and stylized body emphasizes the thigh / hips and the projecting navel (umbilical hernia) that symbolized fertility and the succession of generations. Size: 4" L x 3" W x 9.75" H (10.2 cm x 7.6 cm x 24.8 cm)
Provenance: ex-collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA, acquired before 1995

Stable pressure fissures and abrasions, nicks and chips. Fading to pigments and patina to brass rings. Overall good antique condition without repairs
