Description
Davis and Galt (American (Philadelphia), 1893-1922 for Davis & Freedman (Atlanta, Georgia), early 20th century. Large sterling silver two handled trophy cup presented by the Capital City Club at the Atlanta Horse Show in 1909 to John King Ottley Sr. and his show horse, McAltara. Trophy with tapered body flanked by two streamlined handles with flattened tops and sloping form terminating above circular foot. Exterior finely engraved with scrolled foliates throughout, front with inscription "CAPITAL CITY CLUB TROPHY Atlanta Horse Show 1909", the opposite side with "Harness Horse RUNABOUT APPOINTMENTS WON BY JOHN K. OTTLEY'S McALTARA". Underside of circular foot marked with "STERLING", "1068L" as well as fleur de lis within shield mark for maker, Davis and Galt, additionally with oval plaque for Atlanta jeweler retailer, Davis & Freeman. Overall approximate height 11.125", width (across handles) 11.6", diameter (at top) 7", diameter (of foot) 5.25". Total weight approximately 48.8 troy ounces. Note: Mr. John King Ottley Sr. was a founding member of the Capital City Club as well as the Piedmont Driving Club. He served as President of the First National Bank in Atlanta, Georgia and was extremely well-regarded in the city. His love for dogs and horses led him to built a summer or country home, Joyeuse in Buckhead, Atlanta situated on what is now Lenox Square Mall. In 1933, Mr. Ottley was kidnapped and held for ransom (the first occurrence of this kind of crime in Atlanta) on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. During the kidnapping, Ottley persuaded one of the kidnappers to release him and walk around from the situation.
