Description
French, late quarter 18th century. Louis XVI carved beech wood fauteuil en cabriolet having a gulloche carved oval padded back supported by berried laurel leaves to the base, the scrolled arms with acanthus terminals above a serpentine guilloche carved seat-rail raised on turned, tapering, fluted legs and terminating on toupie feet. The back, elbow rests and seat covered in a soft gold floral medallion upholstery. Underside seat rail hand written 'Mme Bally'. Approximate height 37", width 22.25" (arm to arm), seat depth 17.5", seat height 18".
Condition
Slight wobble. Scattered nicks and chips commensurate with age and usage. Traces of old paint. Repair to upper backside (see image #2). Repair to oval back at left side (see image #4), shrinkage to right side (see image #5). Small loss of molding at patera block left leg. Crack with repair top left leg. Right terminal support with repair (see image #3). Blocks under seatrail (later) with traces of glue. Fabric on oval back is pulling from frame and not tight. Elbows show wear with loss of fabric (see image #5). Fabric on seat has scattered stains but is tight to frame.
