Description
Important pair folk art portraits attributed to John S. Blunt, (American, 1798-1835), of John Batchelor Bull and Caroline Philbey Bull of Brooklyn, New York, c. 1830; descended in the Pooler family of New Jersey. Both oil on poplar panel and housed in Victorian deep walnut frames with gilt liners. John Bull is seated in a wood chair wearing a brown coat over a light yellow vest with white shirt. There is a gold & ebonized memorial pin at his vest opening. He sits next to a small writing desk with inkwell, quill pen and letter. The letter is addressed to: "Mr. John Philbey, London". Caroline Philbey Bull holds her light blue & red edged scarf which is draped over her shoulder and held in her hand. She is seated on a mahogany upholstered settee with a string of brass upholstery tacks, and is adorned with a jewelry suite of gold earrings, pearl necklace, mourning pin & ring. (similar adornments found on other identified female Blunt portraits) Her hair is held up with a tortoise shell hair comb. Sitters identified on reverse. Research indicates that Caroline Philby, age 21, arrived in New York from London on June 14, 1827. A New York newspaper announced their wedding on July 17, 1827. SIZE: 27" x 22". Overall: 31-1/4" x 26" and 32" x 27". CONDITION: Excellent with minor touch up. (family genealogy research accompanies the paintings)
