Description
After John James Audubon (American, 1785-1851) and Robert Havel (English, 1793-1878). "Least Water-hen", plate 349 from "The Birds of America", lithograph on paper, inscribed below image. Ornithological print depicting two water-hens (one adult male and one young adult), moving through shoreline grasses towards a lake or pond. Upper left with "No 70"; upper right with "PLATE CCCXLIX"; lower left with “Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon, F,R,S. F,L,S."; lower center with "Least Water-hen Edwards Rallus Jamaicensis, Gmel. 1 Male. 2. Young Adult"; lower right with "engraved, Printed and Coloured by R.Havell 1836." Framed approximately 26.6" x 34”. Sight size approximately 12.25" x 19.5"
Condition
Paper is laid down on board. Even toning throughout, discoloration to upper left quadrant and less significant discoloration to lower left quadrant commensurate with moisture exposure. Scattered foxing throughout. Loss to lower right edge, vertical tear to upper center edge. Paper apparently without watermark. Verso with blooming discoloration commensurate with moisture exposure (more severe than front). No other signs of damage, loss or repair.
