Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Vera Cruz, ca. 600 to 900 CE. Here we have an uber rare ceramic incensario depicting a jaguar shaman with an expressive visage crowned by a grand headdress, its wide eyes and brows painted with jet black bitumen. The jaguar symbolized power and might throughout the Pre-Columbian world. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. Size: 8.5" L x 6" W x 10.5" H (21.6 cm x 15.2 cm x 26.7 cm)
