Description
Unmarked, John Lentner style of the Porter's General Rod. Comprised of two butts, three mids, and 4 different tips, the rod will build to 9'7', 11'8", 13', and 15'1" depending on the sections used. Butts and tips are black japanned ash and greenheart, with lancewood tips. Fittings are intricately knurled nickel silver, rolled and soldered. Ferrule plugs are of nickel silver with cylindrical cork centers. The butts are without guides, the other sections with opposing Pritchard patent type tunnel guides atop the female ferrules, and opposing, banded guides throughout. Metal work is superb, ornamental, and quite unique, with sculptured fittings at the rod/grip juncture, as well as on both butt caps, which include threaded end caps covering storage wells, one of which contains a tip section, and a 1 x 1 inch sculpted tarnished coin silver shield mid grip, waiting to receive an owner's name or other presentation. The ferrule plugs are of rolled nickel silver over a core of wood, with the plug on one of the butt sections showing makers marks on the wooden face (see Kerr, p 102 for this and images of this rod). Non-original bag. From the Thomas C. Kerr collection of Historic 19th century fishing rods.
