Item Details
Description
Latin America, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A hand carved and painted santo depicting San Jose (Saint Joseph) wearing a flowing green robe with a silver painted sash and red and silver details. His arms are articulated and possibly once cradled the infant Jesus or held his traditional blooming staff. The visage was finely delineated. Note his naturalistic eyes comprised of glass or shell inlays, the fine delineation of his other facial features, beard and long coiffure, and the meticulous carving of each finger and toe. This is a strong example of Mexican folk art depicting the patron saint of family, fathers and carpenters, that has aged quite gracefully. Size: 3.5" W x 12.5" H (8.9 cm x 31.8 cm)
