Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sumatra, Minangkabau area, ca. 18th century, Very fine and early wooden kris (keris) handle. Deep brown hard wood carved in an abstract form probably representing a Garuda, with an heavy head, enlarged round eyes, folded legs, extensive stylized geometric and foliated decoration throughout. The large eyes are typical of the Minangkabau style's striking drama. Superb example! Custom stand.

Mr. Brown was the owner of the Coca Cola franchise in Israel and amassed a huge and very fine collection of Indonesian Kris's as well as other ethnographic and tribal arts. His collection numbered more than 3000 pieces with many on display during his life in the Ein Harod Museum of Art.
