Colombo Club - The Third Eleven Archive, formed (mostly from amongst the Colombo Club Members), comprising: (1) The History of "An Extraordinarily Good Show", [printed record outlining the 55 matches played 1913-36], printed in red, photograph portraits laid down, tissue guards, original red morocco, gilt, club coat of arms on upper cover, rubbed, housed in a black morocco box, gilt initials HLD [Hugh Layard Dowbiggin], 1913-36 (2) 2 Cricket scorebooks, printed forms with manuscript insertions, together c. 165pp. excluding blank forms, numerous club ephemera and photographs of the teams loosely inserted (Dowbiggin farewell, many matches played at Darrawella etc.), 1 vol. inner hinges broken and some ff. loose or working loose, slightly browned, original calf, stamped: "III. XI" on upper covers, 1913-63, oblong 4to (3). The Colombo Cricket Club was formed from amongst the Colombo Club members in 1913, as a result of a "cricket match cabaret" put on to enliven a club ball. The sole opponents for the earlier matches were the Kaultara 'Snarks' (played away at Tebuwana), whilst later games included fixtures at the DMCC, at Daruwalla and DACC, at Radella. Two matches were recorded as being against "Mr. P.R. May's Eleven", including, in 1936, the retirement of Sir Hugh Dowbiggin, the Club's founder. The Club continued to play during the Great War, but during the Second World War play was suspended between 1939 and 1949. The Club continued until 1963 when it was wound up as there were so few players remaining in the district.
