Bouguereau was one of the most celebrated realist painters during his time, drawing inspiration for his lush genre paintings from classical mythology and the female form. He exhibited annually at the Paris Salon and his romantic depictions of antiquity, full of nymphs, goddesses and other beauties, appealed to wealthy collectors and connoisseurs alike. Like many traditional artists of that era, Bouguereau's style of painting fell out of favor with the rise of Impressionism.
