Description
A barrel piano, English, circa 1860, the case of rosewood, the upper section with a central panel of red pleated silk flanked by plain columns, the barrel operated by a brass S-shaped handle with a rosewood knob driving twenty-two hammers, with trip-hammer action, compass c to e3, including the accidentals f1 sharp and f2 sharp, and with only c, g and b in the lower octave, inscribed in ink C48 above the soundboard, height 96.5cm., width 42cm., depth 36cm (without handle). One of the tunes on the barrel is the Soldiers Chorus from Gounod s Faust. This was first performed in Paris in1859 and in London in 1863 which would give some indication of the date of this instrument.
