Description
Street performers in Europe during the mid 19th century were looking for portable instruments that could easily be carried through the streets: enter the Barrel Piano, or Laterna. Portable to stationary and a forerunner to the player piano, this portable size is made out of rosewood, operated with a hand-cranked barrel, and built by John Turner of London England, active 1816 - 1847, as noted on the front tag and marked on the sound board as well. The hand crank turns the internal pinned barrel striking 1 of 22 strings and notes. Desperately needing to be tuned, but operating as intended almost 200 years ago. Strings are marked as to notes. Condition shows some scuffs and scratches, the front tapestry is original, as are all the strings. Some wood loss to the front panel, and oxidation to the brass hardware, but all in all a great piece of early mechanical music in collectable condition. This is not a standard shippable item and will require 3rd party shipping or pickup arrangements to be made. Condition: (Good). Item Dimensions: 18" x 18 - 1/2" x 37".
