Description
DESCRIPTION: Vellum land indenture dated July 17, 1799 regarding a parcel of land known as Number 40 at the corner of Front and Locust Streets adjoining River Alley from the estate of John Harris Jr and Thomas Bennett that was appropriated by a late John Hoge, ownership now reverting to Thomas Bennett. Signed by Harris' executors Robert Harris (his son), William Maclay and John A. Hanna. Also signed by Andrew Forrest, recorder of Dauphin County and Jacob Bueher, Esquire and witnessed by William Wallace, John Ebbert and Bueher. John Harris Jr. (1729-1791) was the son of John Harris Sr. who was an associate of the Penn family and received a land grant in present day Harrisburg to assist in colonizing this area of Penn's colony and to establish friendly relations with the local Indians. He set up trading post and ferry operation which was continued after his death in 1748 by his son who later built what is now the John Harris-Simon Cameron Mansion on Front Street. William Maclay (1737-1804) was a Pennsylvania politician who was a member of Pennsylvania's first two-member delegation to the United States Senate (along with Robert Morris) and later served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, a county judge and a presidential elector. He married the daughter of John Harris Sr. John Andre Hanna (1762-1805) was born in Flemington, New Jersey but later moved to Lancaster and then Harrisburg, practicing law in both locations. He was a delegate to the State convention to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1787, and was secretary of the anti-Federal conference in 1788. Hanna was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1791, and was elected lieutenant colonel of the Third Battalion of Dauphin County on December 29, 1792. He was appointed brigadier general of Dauphin County Brigade on April 19, 1793 and was in command during the Whisky Rebellion of that year. He was appointed major general of the Sixth Division of Dauphin and Berks Counties on April 23, 1800. Hanna was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Fifth and to the four succeeding Congresses and served from March 4, 1797, until his death in Harrisburg in 1805. MEASUREMENTS: 26-1/2" x 19". CONDITION: Very good. Vellum clean and text clear. All seals intact. Scalloped top. Expected folds.
