Description
A letter on official letter paper, in the handwriting and with the signature of the Rebbe Rabbi Avraham Elimelech Perlow.
The letter is addressed to "my friend the chassid Meir son of [?]". The Rebbe writes that he received "the letter of my beloved friend Chaim Mendel about him…all of his suffering…and they are certainly sufferings of the land of Israel, and the only thing to do about this is to strengthen yourself and to look to G-d that He will save him and in particular when he has encouragement from my beloved friend Rabbi Chaim Mendel …it is not the right time to leave the Land of Israel to the Diaspora even to learn Torah, and it is good for him to help father in business so that they will be able to learn with him, and may it be that Heaven will have mercy on him and he will merit to have much pleasure from all of his sons and daughters and to marry them off at the right time and easily. His friend who sends him good wishes and blesses him with a good writing and sealing, a good and blessed year in everything…" - and the Rebbe signed in his handwriting.
The holy Rebbe Rabbi Avraham Elimelech Perlow of Karlin (1894-1942) was the eighth rebbe of the Karlin dynasty. According to the testimony of his chassidim, he was in Israel when the Nazis occupied his city. When he heard about it, he wanted to return to his city in order to encourage the Jews there, his chassidim tried to prevent him, but the Rebbe insisted that he must return and not leave his chassidim by themselves. The Rebbe indeed returned, on the last ship which left, and sadly was murdered by the Nazis in around October 1942.
