Perfection is not demanded, it is the imperfections that are so well loved. This water dropper or suitaki is in a lion dog form, It has many names -Japanese Shi Shi or Chinese Fo Dog. They all mean the Buddhist Lion, with the snail curls on its head and the split mane. This time it even has snail curls on its tail. The lion dog is portrayed as reclining with its head on the front paws and the hind legs tucked in under its tail. The glaze is a thick cobalt blue, so highly prized in Korea. The glaze did not cover the entire surface, leaving light blue and grey areas, The bottom edges are not smooth to the touch. This is typical, the its maker did not refine the rough edges.
