Description
As in many African tribal cultures, Guru Ivory Coast masks are/were worn by dancers in sacred ceremonies, sometimes related to secret-society initiations. Today, some dances are still performed, but not as often as in the past - traditional Guru culture has been extremely challenged in modern history. Brutal colonization by the French between 1906-1912 not only brought the Baule name "Guro" to this ethnic minority (formerly these people were known as the Kweni), but it also changed the economics of the Guru. Guru masks are considered to be some of the finest made in all of West Africa, and they are popular with collectors. 20th c. Condition very good with small chip on back side edge.
