African Tribal Fang Ngil or BAKWELE, D.R.C Mask. Second half 20th. C. The features of this mask that distinguishes as a work of Fang sculptor include the elongated, heart-shaped face and the long, fine nose. The face is painted white with kaolin and the facial features highlighted in black with beard. White is the color of ancestors, and this mask is meant to assume the esoteric authority of the spirit world. Fang mask is the type worn by travelling troubadours who collect and share the folk history of the tribe in songs. It is also worn by members of the ngil male society especially when sorcerers are being hunted to be punished. Condition very good . H. 12'' W. 7'' D. 4''.
