Continually embracing the beauty and eroticism of the female form, Pop artist Tom Wesselmann explored a wide range of media and techniques. Among his most interesting are his steel drawings, which remain a coveted favorite with collectors.Wesselmann creates stunningly delicate interpretations of the female form. The use of simple contour and negative space to create form recalls the renowned French artist, Henri Matisse, who favored the human figure and pure color.
Tom Wesselmann (American, 1931-2004)
A key figure in the American Pop Art movement, Tom Wesselmann is best known for his sexually charged series, “Great American Nudes,” composed of flat figures and intense colors. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Wesselmann attended the University of Cincinnati before serving in the army from 1951 to 1954. His interest in drawing began while in service, and after leaving the army he studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and Cooper Union. Wesselmann began making small collages and assemblages in the early 1960s, using images culled from consumer culture. A central player in American art, Wesselmann’s works can be found in numerous collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden, and the National Gallery, Berlin, among countless others.
