A favorite subject of Jim Dine’s is the historic, “Venus de Milo”. Dine’s fascination with this classical masterpiece inspired a greater interest in Greco-Roman sculpture. This particular print shows a classically draped figure, reminiscent of the Greek dancing figures of 200-300 BC. This print is monumental with strong passages of woodcut sculpting.

Jim Dine (American, b. 1935)

Associated with both Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism, American artist Jim Dine does not associate with a specific movement, drawing influence from Dada assemblage and collage techniques for his vast oeuvre. Dine gained public recognition in the 1960s for his work on five Happenings with Claes Oldenberg and Allan Kaprow. Afterwards, however, he returned to painting, mixed-media work and assemblages, often incorporating personal elements into his works. Best known for his study of the expressive individual through the combination of the iconic and the personal, Dine’s work can be found in numerous collections. The artist currently works and lives in New York and Vermont
