Sam Francis was initially influenced by the work of the first generation abstract expressionists. In his own work, Francis explored abstraction with layers of dramatic color. For his print work, Francis used primary color layers, overlapping them in stunning compositions. His mark making technique was wildly slap-dash and charismatic. The grid matrix became one of Francis' favored compositions and the artist returned to it many times in his career. In this work the grid presents a bold contrast of shape in the negative spaces. Another impression of this print is in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, PA.
Sam Francis (American, 1923-1994)
California-born abstract expressionist painter Sam Francis is regarded as one of the 20th century’s leading interpreters of light and color. His first works were influenced by the Abstract Expressionism of Mark Rothko, Arshile Gorky, and Clyfford Still, but he quickly developed his own colorful abstract style after moving to Paris in 1950. In addition to New York abstract expressionism, his work holds references to color field painting, Chinese and Japanese art, French impressionism, and his own Bay Area roots. Throughout a long and prolific career, Francis created thousands of paintings as well as works on paper, prints, and monotypes.
