Description

Extremely Rare Miniature Salt-Glazed Stoneware Pitcher with Hand-Modeled Face, probably Virginia origin, circa 1860-1880, ovoid-bodied pitcher with flared collar and applied handle, the front decorated with a depressed human face with pinched nose and incised eyes and mouth. This pitcher is the first example of American stoneware we have seen with a face decorated in this manner. A 3/8" glazed-over chip to side of spout, which occurred in the firing. A 3/8" in-the-firing base chip. Provenance: Found in North Carolina. H 3".
