Description
Rare and Fine Stoneware Ewer with Elaborate Incised Bird Decoration, Inscribed "W.H.S.", New York State origin, circa 1860-1890, ovoid form with tall narrow collar, pinched pouring spout, and rounded handle. Decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a flying bird surrounded by vine-like flourishes. Collar decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted stylized wave pattern. Base of ewer incised with the initials "W.H.S." flanked by corkscrewing vines, underscored by an incised cobalt band. An artistically-rendered work, evident both in the potting of the vessel and its delicate incised decoration. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor in 1987 for the impressive sum of $1000. Excellent condition with a minor chip on interior of spout and a tiny in-the-firing base nick. H 11 1/2".
