Description
[Photography/Sawyer's Indian Art Gallery]. Very rare boudoir photograph entitled "Thomas Woodward's Squaw and Papoose/Kiowas" with the imprint on verso: "W.L. Sawyer's Indian Art Gallery/Purcell/Indian Territory" followed by a list of subjects available from the studio. Photo shows mother seated holding baby in cradleboard w/ daughter standing to side. Clothing and baby carrier are highly decorated. Likely the family of Thomas Woodward, a white man who married into and was adopted by the Kiowa tribe living in or near Anadarko, OK. According to the 1903 Annual Report of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Woodward sat on the board of the Kiowa Agency. 8 1/2 in. x 5 1/4 in. William L. Sawyer (1862-) worked as a mail carrier and store clerk before going into business for himself taking mostly portrait photographs in Purcell, Indian Terr., in 1886. This photo likely pre-dates his partnership w/ William J. Lenny. They operated a photography studio in the town of Purcell from c. 1889-1891. Card mount shows light wear & grime, foxing, image good.
