The two wooden panels are carved in relief and show different scenes from the Passion of Christ.

Panel I

Judas Kiss

Judas betrayed Jesus by kissing him in the garden of Gethsemane. What follows is Jesus’ imprisonment. Jesus and Judas are displayed in the foreground, behind them two soldiers discernable by their Jewish hats, in the foreground crouches an apostle, perhaps Simon Peter.

Flagellation of Jesus

Christ is tied to the column, he is flanked by two figures, who have raised their whips high in order to let them descend harsh on the body of the Son of God. The soldiers are shown extremely symmetrically, their faces are seen in front view, while the bodies are shown in profile.

The Procession to Calvary

Again flanked by two soldiers, Jesus is shouldering his cross. The soldier on his left carries three nails, with which he is to be nailed to the cross later.

Crucifixion

Classical representation of the Crucifixion with Mary and John, at the center the crucified Son of God. The representation of his body with a long loincloth, folded knees and bowed head is characteristic of 14th century iconography.

Panel II

On the far left behind one another are depicted two people. In the background the Roman centurion Abenadar, which recognizes the crucified Jesus as Son of God. The personality of the figure in the foreground remains unclear, he is not a soldier since he is barefoot, so he may be representing an apostle. He is dressed in a blue robe and wearing a red coat with strikingly draped folds.

Descent from the Cross

A chaotic scene in which Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus are taking Jesus down from the cross. Nicodemus is on his knees to remove the nails at the feet. Mary and John flank the event in sorrow.

The women at the tomb

In front of the stone tomb three sleeping guards are positioned, in the background three women who have come to embalm the body of Jesus. But the grave is opened and the body of Christ has disappeared. To the left, however, can be seen an angel sitting on the tomb who announces the resurrection of Christ.

Resurrection

In a garden setting, Mary Magdalene meets the resurrected Christ, which as triumphator over death is wearing a robe with Gothic drapery and presents a Christian banner. Only when Jesus calls her by her name, she recognizes him, falls to her knees and tries hugging or kissing him. Jesus answers with the famous words ‘Noli Me Tangere’ and instructs Magdalene to inform the disciples.
