Description
Africa, Nigeria, ca. 1929 to 1940 CE. An elegant, hand-carved wooden face mask created by the Eket peoples of the Niger River Delta. The Eket are a sub-group of the Ibibio people, and Eket is the name of a Nigerian city as well as the most prevalent language of the region. Eket masks are usually worn during Ekpo secret society ceremonies. This example presents a minimalist style, the visage detailed solely with openwork eyes and mouth and a high relief nose. This lack of detail contributes to the power of the mask. A finely carved mask with a generally happy countenance. Custom, museum-quality stand. Size: 4.5" W x 7.75" H (11.4 cm x 19.7 cm)
