Description
A beautiful Egyptian wood panel depicting Anubis, Late Period, c. 664 - 332 BC, as guardian of the necropolis, the god is here depicted in classic form in profile atop a shrine wearing a filleted collar, the detailed in black line. Above and to right are three short vertical columns of hieroglyphic text and the entire scene is bordered by a wide light blue band with black borders, the field is creme colored which contrasts the god nicely, the wedge-shaped tongue and groove attachment system apparent on each end. A beautiful example of ancient Egyptian painting and is a panel from shabti box. 11 3/4 in x 12 in (29.7 x 30.4 cm). Very well-preserved and without restoration or repair. The small missing piece of wood in the center is due to the Egyptian by this time having to deal with a great scarcity of wood, most of which was coming from the Levant. This forced craftsman to constantly re-use wood and the lower portion of this panel was extended to the desired length by adding a strip of wood at the bottom of the main piece and filling, with two small pieces of wood, a groove on the lower part, the plaster not able to keep it in place for the 2500+ years this object has survived. Ex New Jersey estate.
