Rare 1894-Dated Silver U.S. Assay Commission Medal
1894-Dated President Grover Cleveland U.S. Assay Commission Medal. Silver. 33.5 mm. JK AC-38. By Charles E Barber and George T Morgan. PCGS graded Genuine-UNC Details.
JK AC-38. Obverse shows President Grover Cleveland faces to the right with the legend THE MINT OF THE UNITED STATES ANNUAL ASSAY 1894. Holder states cleaning. Except for the changed date, this obverse is identical to the design used in 1886 and 1887. The reverse design depicts a woman in classical dress, seated and facing a cherub. The woman is holding one weight out of a set of weights being held by the cherub. She is holding a needle in her other hand, representing the touch stone method of assay. In exergue, below, is the phrase REM ACU, translated to "(You have touched) the matter with a needle." The complete phrase should be Tetigisti Rem Acu, although Julian noted that the verb Tetigisti is understood in the context of the inscription and design. This Silver 1894-Dated President Grover Cleveland U.S. Assay Commission Medal is extremely rare and is missing in virtually every collection in Silver.
