Antique Chinese stamped signed watercolor painting with annotations indicating Qianlong 18th century featuring pre-War C. T. Loo Gallery, New York stamp on backing paper remnants.

Has old backing stamp of pioneer Chinese art dealer Ching Tsai Loo from his New York Gallery. Loo, a contemporary of Duveen & Yamanaka, helped build many major Chinese art collections including: Met - MFA Boston - Freer - Penn - Fogg - Philadelphia - Indianapolis.

CHINESE SCHOOL, Antique and in the Manner of 18th Century Qing Quianlong: Landscape with River, Mountain and Houses, watercolor on paper laid down on slightly larger paper laid down on larger heavier paper, 7 13/16 x 5 3/16 inches (7 7/8 x 5 1/4 inches first laid down mount dimension, 14 3/4 x 9 7/8 inches second, larger laid down mount overall sheet dimension & 18 5/8 x 15 1/4 x 1 inch framed dimension), signed or stamped with artist's, collector's or perhaps export double gourd red ink stamp of unknown period lower left within image, two lines of black ink calligraphic symbols including Western dating of 1736 and 1796 for Quianlong reign of unknown period lower right margin with slightly illegible indistinct pencil translation of "Att. to Lo'ien Si J'ing [??? - Note: See alternate spellings on backing notes verso - ???]/Chien Lung period" in pencil lower center margin, number 81 - 62 in red pencil or artist's crayon lower right margin corner, numbered "13/XNX" in ink & labeled "No. 13" both verso of mounting sheet, numbered "62" in pencil verso of mat at lower right corner, frame backing paper has C. T. LOO gallery black ink stamp with partially legible New York address inscribed G 7027 over a second obscured 7027 all in red, inscribed on Number line "13" and inscribed on title line "by Chien Sa Ding [???], an additional word or number has been obscured in pencil on a lower line, additionally inscribed with an apparent cost or pricing code "$CXP" as well as inscribed with a likely vintage 1920's - Depression - WWII-era cost or price of "$100", old vintage but perhaps not as early as backing paper typed label taped to backing "Framed painting on paper, depicting a landscape with river, mountain and houses, by Chien se-ding, 18th Century." Additionally there is a faint "18th century" written in pencil at upper right of the backing. Reverse of frame inscribed "A4:254" [???] in pencil on reverse in addition to framing notations. Vintage or antique natural finish wooden frame molding with gilt liner, glass absent.

C. T. Loo Gallery, New York, circa first half 20th century; Discovered by one of our family members in a sale of estate items near Palm Beach, Florida, USA, 2015.

Condition
Generally sound and attractive is as discovered estate condition. Thin paper laid down on slightly larger sheet of thin paper in turn laid down on large sheet of heavy paper upon which calligraphy characters, Ch'ien Lung dates & pencil notation in English is written. Towards all four corners mostly away from subject matter are small diameter surface scuff hole losses down to next fine layer of mounting paper incl. above upper left peak, above upper right peak, above gourd stamp, under lower left-most branches & above shore boulder all at lower left as well as in center of grass & along paper edge at lower right. Pigment hues likely evenly mellowed with age. Mounting tape residue to reverse of paper mount. Matting acidified, browned & not attached. Backing paper w/ NY dealer stamp & inscriptions very tattered, has one piece loose at top in middle of Loo stamp, has taped on label & is acidified to brittle that's still deteriorating. Frame worn/no glass.
