Description
A BALINESE POLYCHROME PAINTED WOOD AND CASSOWARY FEATHER CELULUK MASK, CIRCA 1970'S, with grotesque facial features centering a bulbous bald head above deep inset eyes and a mouth of large teeth with fangs, over a similarly carved flexible lower jaw, trimmed in long Cassowary bird feathers, mask height: 13", with feathers, height: 33". NOTE: This sinister mask depicts an evil witch in Balinese folklore and is worn during the Bali Kite festival. This is a Hindu religious event which is intended to send a message to Hindu Gods to create abundant crop harvests and takes place in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia. This was purchased by the Seldens during a trip to Indonesia and region during the 1970's.
