TWO VICTORIAN BRASS MOUNTED BURLWOOD BOXES, ONE BY TAHAN OF PARIS, SIGNED, 19TH CENTURY, one of miniature suitcase form with a rectangular hinged lid centering an engraved fleur-de-lys plaque within rosewood inlaid shadow trim, on a burl maple panel bordered by rosewood cross-banding and mounted with brass mounted straps, above similarly decorated conforming sides and push button release, opening to a rosewood lined interior having a gilt lockplate signed "TAHAN A PARIS," length: 3 3/4"; a gothic revival brass mounted burl walnut letter box, with arched lid centering a quatre foils detailed plaque, above a shaped escutcheon flanked by reticulated fleur-de-lys corner mounts, opening to a black paper and deep green moire silk lined two compartment interior, length: 9 1/8".
Condition
Each in good condition with normal surface buildup, age cracks, minor marks and scratches. The miniature suitcase has a paper lined underside with some losses and is slightly warped, enclosed by four corner holes that were probably for feet. The letter box front right corner mount needs one brass nail, the back lower section has an old restoration, interior lining is later but appropriate.
