Description
Paul Jacoulet (French, 1902-1960), "La Bocal de Poissons Rouges" from "Bat" series-1942, color woodblock on paper, pencil signed center left above red bat seal, titled lower right margin, calligraphic seal marks at right margin for carver Maeda Kentaro (Japanese, c. 1891-1987) and printer Fujii Shunosuke (Japanese, active 1940-1950), from an edition of 150. Figural work on paper depicting two Chinese women wearing long robes (one holding fan) in an ornate interior with hanging lantern and figural screen beside a table with silk tablecloth with precious objects displaying two fish in a round glass bowl. Framed approximately 20.75" x 16.75". Sight size approximately 16.6" x 13".
Condition
Two edges appear to have been cut down. Color fading to sheet overall. Light toning to sheet. Signs of mat burn from earlier mounting on edges of scene, most noticeably in lower quadrants. Small tear in upper right corner running approximately 0.25” vertically. With pin-sized hole at lower left. Scattered losses to corners and edges. With deep discoloration to verso consistent with water or humidity exposure. Joined to board at top left and right as well as bottom center with hinging tape. Light scattered foxing, most noticeably in left and top margins. Scattered scratches to frame. No apparent signs of further damage.
