Description
Antique 'Illinois Soldiers & Sailors Home' Deposit Chest. In 1885 the General Assembly created the Illinois Soldiers' and Sailors' Home at Quincy to provide subsistence and a home for honorably discharged and disabled veterans of the Mexican and Civil Wars. The deposit chest still has some deposit booklets with soldier's names and inscriptions.Each Soldier or sailor was assigned a "Registry Number" upon admission to the Home. These numbers were assigned in consecutive order beginning with the number eleven. If a discharged veteran were later readmitted, he kept the number initially issued to him. Size: 27 x 51 x 10.25 inches.
