Description
DESCRIPTION: Shusaku Arakawa (New York/Japan, 1936-2010). Color lithograph printer's proof on paper. Depicts two brains with rays from a centralized fluted and banded column. Marked "Color Samples" and "Publishing of the Mechanism of Meaning". Signed upon the lower right in pencil. Numbered 1/63. Artist's embossing to lower left. From a work made in collaboration with architect Madeline Gins that developed from a research project and which first appeared at the 1970 Venice Biennale and in an exhibition in 1997 at the Guggenheim Museum SoHo. Also used as the cover illustration to the book by Arakawa and Gins. Metal frame and mat. Beginning in 1963 Arakawa collaborated with fellow artist and architect Madeline Gins on the research project The Mechanism of Meaning which was completed by 1973. This research project and the architectural projects that stem from it, both built and unbuilt, formed the basis of the 1997 Arakawa + Gins: Reversible Destiny exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum. PROVENANCE: From the Saul and Florence Putterman Collection, Sarasota, Florida. Saul Putterman is an entrepreneur and founder of apparel and fashion manufacturing enterprises in New York, Florida, and Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. Florence Putterman is a highly regarded artist who received her BS degree at New York University and her Masters of Fine Arts Degree at Penn State University. Originally from New York City, The Puttermans have made their home for over 50 years in Selinsgrove, PA, and winter in Sarasota, Florida. They are active humanitarians and philanthropists who collected fine modern and contemporary art and tribal art during their lives. MEASUREMENTS: 29" x 23". Overall with frame and mat 38" x 31". CONDITION: Minor toning.
