Description
The cross stitch sampler is called that because it was generally stitched by a young girl learning how to stitch and record alphabet and other patterns to be used in her eventual household sewing. The back of this sampler bears a piece of tape that is handwritten, "Made in 1847 by Grandmother ??? when she was 9 yrs. old." It is framed and enclosed in glass and may have been used as a serving tray. The tray, with handles, measures approximately 29" x 17-3/4". Considering its age, it is in very good condition, with just a few minor frame dings.
