Description
Comprises four envelopes featuring a bust-length portrait of John Bell. Three feature red ink "Traitor" hand stamps across Bell's image. Two are the imprinted "JOHN BELL, in a recent secession speech at Knoxville, said, 'For himself he had taken his position. The noose was probably around his neck, then he was frank to declare himself a rebel!'." One bears the inscription "JOHN BELL, in a recent secession speech at Knoxville, said, 'He had been surprised that any friend of his could suppose for a moment, that when this great contest had become, as it had not done, a war between the North and the South, he could be found occupying any other position than that of for the South'." Accompanied by two campaign cards, one bears a bust-length portrait of John Bell, the other bears a bust-length portrait of John Breckinridge. Both are stamped "Traitor" across the central images in red ink. Envelope sizes vary from 2-3/8" H x 5-5/8" W to 3-3/8" H x 5-5/8" W. All cards 3-1/4" H x 2-1/2" W. Condition varies, all sold together as is. Defects include age-toning, creases, fold wear, water stains, and mounting residue on verso.
