Romantic genre landscape of a lively harbor setting with fishermen, selling their catch to cooks and famer’s wives
Figural staffage rendered in great detail and loose brush strokes
Composition in conformity with the style of the Old Masters of the 16th and 17th centuries

Framed in heavy gold colored frame: 55 x 67.7 cm

Condition:
The panel painting is in a good condition with minimal signs of age and wear. Under UV-light tiny touch-ups appear in the area of the group of people. Along the edges slight color loss due to framing can be seen. The framed dimensions measure 55 x 67.7 cm, the dimensions of the panel are 26.7 x 38.6 cm.
Carl Hilgers (1818-1890)
Carl Hilgers took drawing classes at the Düsseldorf Academy and later studied under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer. He was a member of the artists' association ‘Malkasten’ and undertook numerous travels through Germany as well as to Holland, Belgium and France. After a short stay in Berlin, he returned to Dusseldorf where he was active for the rest of his life. Hilgers’s extensive and thematically diverse oeuvre includes primarily romantic landscape motifs, including winter landscapes and river scenes in the Dutch tradition. (nlu)
