Description: Wet card compass by J Garraio, brass bowl inserted in handmade wooden base, most likely made by it's owner, "A". This type of compass was used as a Dory navigational instrument likely for fishermen of Portuguese descent working the waters of "The Grand Banks".
History: J Garraio is a company that sells nautical equipment, established since 1860, and was created by brothers João and Joaquin BasÃlio Garraio. J. Garraio began its activity with regulation of chronometers, (making use of his observatory with lens), commercialization of nautical instruments and creation of a navigation school, in which they formed plenty of Captains of the merchant navy. Sextants, magnetic compass, binnacles, lighthouses, fog horns, barographs, odometers, screw propellers and telegraphs, were only some of the most important of the navigation instruments commercialized by J. Garraio.
