Description
Description: Mahogany torchiere, or candle stand, Charleston, SC, 18th century. Top has a raised dish rim. Reed carved column, incorporating garlands, tassels and stalks of rice. The tripod base also incorporates stalks of rice along the knee, and ends in ball and claw feet.A letter from the Historic Charleston Foundation to the consignor...it is indeed interesting to know the location of fine pieces of furniture of local origin(see image for remainder of letter).
History: A torchère (French lampe torchère) or torch lamp, is a lamp with a tall stand of wood or metal. Originally, torchères were candelabra, usually with two or three lights. When it was first introduced in France towards the end of the 17th century the torchère mounted one candle only, and when the number was doubled or tripled the improvement was regarded almost as a revolution in the lighting of large rooms.
