Description: A 19th century urn shaped knife box made of English mahogany with solid acorn finial. Lathe turned, carved. and held on a rising ratchet support.. Standing on a well formed octagonal base with string inlay. This knife box is an ideal ornamentation for a doorway or fireplace. Urn has a warm mellow nut brown patina.
History: In the Middle Ages people usually brought their own cutlery with them when eating away from home. The more expensive types came with their own custom-made leather cases, stamped and embossed in various designs.
