Description
17 inches high x 30-1/2 inches wide (43.2 x 77.5 cm)
The masterfully crafted panel consisting of two door panels united in one frame, composed of East Indian Rosewood, maple, walnut, spindle-wood, oak, mahogany, various fruitwoods including pear or cherry, with bog oak possibly used for areas with green shading, depicting with great precision and attention to carved detail a battle, possibly the Battle of Pavia during the Italian Wars (1521-1526), with strategic commanders and a foreshortened knight on horseback in foreground before soldiers on foot and horse, walled fortress to center, and cannoneers amid architecture and tents on a rolling terrain traversed by a river.
This lot includes a photograph of the framed panels in situ in a late 19th century interior setting.
The framed panel and photograph were purchased in 2013 from an estate sale in Boise, Idaho. Accompanying the panel is the family story that following WWII, the panels and photograph were brought to the U.S. by an American serviceman who fought in the European Theater.
